Within the Void

An interactive installation. By Me!

Polyester rope, stainless steal, vinyl lettering.

What is within the Void?

If you hold a needle or pendant on a string over a pregnant woman’s belly or hand you can determine the sex of her baby. You must hold the string steady and the needle will begin to swing. If the needle swings back and forth the woman is having a boy, if it swings in a circle she is having a girl.

This method has correctly predicted the sex of all the babies born in my family for the last 50 years. Here are the same circumstances, only on a larger scale.

This is a curious endeavor. What will happen when men and women lie beneath the needle? Will it remain still? Swing in accordance to the sex of the viewer? Or will it react to something unseen in the space between the body and the needle, something within the experimenter?

Poem.

So here is a rather recent poem that I've recorded. This was a part of a group exhibition which included a podcast component. To download or listen to the podcast go here.
Here's the text:

Within the Tome

and I open the book

[pages slip in to fingerprint trenches]

to the place where I left

an insect paralyzed

by the weight

poise to purge its corpse

from the margin

hesitate before

the frail life and

reach my hand -

In its tiny body: my tiny soul.

pray over this death

and set the remains

entrenched

in literature

to be found

in hands yet naive

Colour.

Sorry, these are all out of order. I'm not too good at this blogging thing.
The idea is that the color fades from dark to light or vise versa.

Black & White.

The purple color of these first set of images is from not letting them fix properly during printing. This is an intentional effect.

35 mm Black & White.

These are 4x5 negative contact prints, black & white.
